How to save recipes from Instagram reels (and actually find them later)
You saved the reel. Three weeks later you’re in the supermarket, scrolling a grid of 400 thumbnails, trying to remember which one had the lemon pasta. Here’s how to keep the recipe itself, not just the video.

Why Instagram’s Saved folder isn’t a recipe box
Tapping the bookmark keeps a pointer to the post. For recipes, that falls short in three ways:
- You can’t search it. There’s no search inside Saved, so finding one recipe means scrolling thumbnails.
- The recipe often isn’t in the caption. Plenty of cooking reels say the quantities out loud or flash them on screen, or ask you to comment a word to get the recipe by DM.
- It disappears with the post. If the creator deletes or archives the reel, it’s gone from your Saved too.
Collections help a little (one for dinners, one for baking), but you still have to rewatch the video to cook from it.
Four ways to keep a recipe from a reel
- Instagram collections. Free and built in. Fine for a handful of recipes, but there’s no search and no text, and you still cook from the video.
- Screenshots. Quick, but a screenshot is one frame. Ingredients said out loud or shown across ten seconds don’t make it, and your camera roll becomes the new pile.
- Copy the caption into a notes app. Works when the whole recipe is in the caption. It’s manual, and it misses everything that’s only in the video.
- Share it to an app that reads the video. Postfolio takes the reel, reads the caption, what’s said and what’s shown on screen, and gives you back a written recipe.
Step by step: from reel to written recipe
Install Postfolio and open it once, so it shows up in your phone’s share list. Then:
- Open the reel in Instagram and tap the Share button (the paper plane).
- Tap Share to… (on some phones it’s under More) and pick Postfolio.
- Go back to scrolling. About a minute later the reel is a page in your library: the ingredients with their quantities, then the steps in order.
- It files itself in a recipes folder. Edit anything you like: swap an ingredient, add a note about how it turned out.
Finding it again
This is where a written page pays off. Search the way you remember it: “that pasta with lemon”, “the chickpea thing with yogurt”. Postfolio searches by meaning, so it finds the recipe even when your words don’t match the creator’s.
You can also ask your library a question, like “what can I cook with chickpeas and spinach?”, and get an answer drawn from the recipes you saved, with a link to each one it used.
Tips for recipe reels
- “Comment RECIPE and I’ll DM you.” The reel itself may not have the quantities. Save it anyway, then paste the recipe from the DM into the page.
- The recipe is on a blog. If the caption links to one, share that page from your browser too. Postfolio reads articles and recipe sites as well as videos.
- Some posts can’t be read, like ones from private accounts. They’re kept with their thumbnail and don’t count toward your monthly saves.
Questions
Can I search my Instagram saved posts?
Not inside Instagram. Saved has collections but no search. To search saved recipes they need to exist as text somewhere, which is what sharing them to Postfolio does.
What happens if the creator deletes the reel?
The page stays in your library. Postfolio keeps what it read, so the recipe survives even when the post doesn’t.
Is it free?
The free plan reads 10 saves a month and includes folders, search by meaning and Ask. Pro reads 100 saves a month.
